John Sherry was born in Northern Ontario and grew up over the border in Northern Michigan in the USA. His mother is an administrator in the state prison system, and his father is the headmaster of the local high school. He and his brother were additionally raised in large part by their grandmother.
His goal from an early age was to travel and live abroad. He studied French and Russian at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, and did his Masters in Paris before attending law school in Chicago.
He was later offered an opportunity in Moscow which he jumped at and has been living and working here since 2009.
